Mary Hare School for the Deaf, one of our two affiliated Schools, held their Speech Day for the 2021/22 academic year in March 2023.
Past Master Eddie Taylor represented the Lightmongers at the event and was privileged to be asked to present the Lightmongers Science Prize to the successful student, Georgie Ellis.
Georgie’s teacher citation in nominating Georgie for the Prize was:
Georgie has demonstrated a passion for protecting the environment throughout her schooling and was awarded the prize in recognition of her longstanding commitment to sustainable living.
Georgie played a key role in getting an Eco-Club up and running before the start of the COVID pandemic and since then she has worked tirelessly with the Eco-Club, School Council and various members of the Leadership Team to help Mary hare to become more of an environmentally friendly school.
During lockdown science lessons Georgie spoke passionately about the issues of single use plastics and helped plan a series of lessons delivered to her peers to highlight these problems and potential solutions. She spoke with enthusiasm about her dream to live in a Tiny Eco Home and surprised her teachers and peers with the breadth of research she had carried out on the subject.
Georgie led discussions with external providers of waste collection to help improve Mary Hare’s recycling efforts. She has also led discussions with other pupils on how they feel about recycling to help us break down the barriers to becoming a greener school. Georgie has instigated practical plans to promote recycling within the classroom environment. She provided containers to collect empty pens for recycling on a termly basis.
More recently Georgie has worked with the Eco Club carrying out a survey of electrical use within classrooms and within bedrooms in the houses with a view of distributing this information to families so that they can reduce their energy usage and help with the cost of living.
The Lightmongers congratulate Georgie on her success and wish her much success for the future.
