The Master, Stephen Thomas, attended the formal ceremony of the lighting up of the first four bridges of the Illuminated River project. Once complete, this will be the longest public art commission in the world at 2.5 miles in length and re-light 15 of the Thames bridges, from Albert to Tower Bridge.
One of the Objects of the Lightmongers is to “encourage and foster the art and science of lighting” and therefore we have been highlighting this project since it was first launched. We invited the lead artist, Leo Villareal, to give a Lecture on it in July 2017, which was well attended, demonstrating the interest in the project.
We were delighted therefore to see the new lighting for the first 4 of the bridges formally switched on at the ceremony on 17th July 2019. We now look forward to the continuation of this project over the next three years, transforming the appearance of the Thames at night through coordinated lighting.
