Liveryman James Simpson
It was the turn of the Lightmongers to host the 4 Liveries Lecture in 2018, which took place on 17th July and was held in the prestigious surroundings of the Livery Hall of The Worshipful Company of Painter Stainers.
Liveryman James Simpson gave a superb presentation titled “Visualisation at the Royal Opera House and the future of Entertainment Technology”. James explained his role as the Lighting Visualiser at the Royal Opera House, which involves designing the lighting sets for the spectacular productions that are staged there. His presentation demonstrated how technology and art work together to create more ambitious and fantastic productions for audiences.
James shared some of his PHD research findings on future technology and the effect it will have on theatre productions of the future. He also gave some insights into how new technologies and the use of systems and tools from other disciplines can be used to improve and speed up the way that the theatre industry designs its shows. Overall it was a fascinating insight into what goes on backstage regarding the lighting of shows and how new technologies would influence this in the future.

The Companies take it in turns to host the 4 Liveries lectures each year, with it being our turn this year. The lectures cover a broad range of subjects and are well worth attending, so do watch out for the notification of next year’s event.
