Each year the Worshipful Company of Lightmongers hosts its prestigious May Court Dinner, and one of the highlights of this wonderful evening is the presentation of our annual Education Awards. Held this year on May 7th, the 2025 awards ceremony celebrated the achievements of some truly inspiring students. With t members, guests, and Award recipients present, the evening offered not only recognition for academic excellence but also plenty of networking opportunities in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Shining a Light on Excellence

Maria Hurtado Fernandez was the worthy recipient of the Lightmongers’ UCL Award 2025, generously sponsored by the Canary Wharf Group. Her work stood out among the candidates, and the judging panel was unanimous in selecting her for the honour. Maria was presented with her award by the Master Lightmonger, Tony Ginman.

Another distinguished winner was Josie Ireland, who received the Peter Parker ALPD Award 2025. This award has special significance, as it is funded by a legacy left to the Lightmongers Charitable Trust by Peter Parker, a respected past member whose interests covered the worlds of lighting technology and the theatre.

Recognizing the Head Students of our Affiliated Schools

The Lightmongers also celebrated young leaders from their two affiliated schools: New College Worcester for the Blind (NCW) and Mary Hare School for the Deaf. These awards are made possible thanks to the generosity of Past Master Hugh Ogus and reflect not just academic success but leadership attributes as well.

The winner from NCW was Asal Fallah-Damavandi, this year’s Head Student:

The winners from Mary Hare School were their two head students, Sophie Culver and Matilda Moutrie

Giving Back: Supporting Educational Institutions

The dinner also provided an opportunity to formally present the Lightmongers Charitable Trust’s annual donations to NCW and Mary Hare School. These donations are very much appreciated by both Schools, enabling them to provide additional support and facilities to their students.

Words of Encouragement and Gratitude

In his after-dinner speech, Master Tony Ginman congratulated all award winners and praised the work of the affiliated schools. He spoke warmly about the students’ bright futures and the important role education plays in the lighting industry and beyond.

Rachel Perks, Principal of NCW, responded on behalf of the schools and award recipients. Her speech was heartfelt and inspiring, expressing deep appreciation for the Lightmongers’ ongoing support and commitment to education. She closed with a traditional toast: “May the Lightmongers Company flourish, root and branch, forever.”

An evening to remember

As the evening came to a close, the Master invited everyone to join him for a stirrup cup—an opportunity for more conversation and camaraderie. It was the perfect end to an evening filled with inspiration, celebration, and community spirit.
