One of the highlights of the Masters year is attending the send-off for the Worshipful Company of Hackney Carriage Driver’s annual Children’s Magical Taxi Tour, taking sick and terminally ill children to Disneyland Paris. The Hackney Carriage Drivers have provided this 3 day trip, from Friday to Sunday, for 25 years now, and it is very much appreciated by the families participating.
The Lightmongers support the event as part of their charitable activities by sponsoring one of the carriages (black cabs). This year over 100 taxis, plus support vehicles, set off from Canary Wharf after breakfast at 7am on 28th September. The morning at Canary Wharf was simply “Magical” The atmosphere was amazing and the generosity of so many is breathtaking. Canary Wharf Group provided the venue and the entertainment, Marriott Hotels provided the breakfast, P & O provided packed lunches and The Electric Taxi Company provided pocket money for the children.
The Master of the Worshipful Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers this year, Phil Davies, is the man who started this wonderful event 25 years ago and he and a very hard working and enthusiastic committee have organized the event every year since it started.
The send-off from Canary Wharf is supported by many Livery Companies with the formal start being announced by the Lord Mayor and the convoy of black cabs enjoys a police escort all the way to Eurodisney (on both sides of the channel). The French motorway tolls were all cancelled and the Managing Director of Euro Tunnel was there early to ensure all went smoothly in Calais. European cooperation at it’s best!
The children and their families had an amazing weekend and our taxi took a lovely Dad and two children who were so appreciative.
