Our annual Charity Golf Day was held on 9th May at the Royal Automobile Club Epsom, on their magnificent Old Course. The weather was unkind this year with extremely heavy prolonged rain during the latter part of the afternoon. At one point several greens were under water! As a result, some teams were not able to complete all 18 holes and the judging was therefore based on the first 13 holes, which everybody had completed.

The Lightmongers Charitable Trust makes financial donations to charities who work with those who suffer from sensory impairment of either sight or hearing or both. As part of that, this year all the funds raised from the Golf Day were in support of our two affiliated schools: New College Worcester for blind students and Mary Hare School for deaf students.

When all the rather wet golfers had showered and dried out, a very good dinner awaited them, at which the Master Lightmonger thanked all the golfers of the 18 teams that took part for braving the weather conditions to raise funds for our affiliated schools. He particularly thanked James Hill who organised and managed the golf tournament itself and undertook the role of the pro in ‘Beat the Pro’ on the short 13th hole and also our Clerk, Phill Hyde for all the organising that takes place behind the scenes. His final vote of thanks was to all those that had supported the event in the form of sponsorship e.g. the various golf holes, the lunch and the wine and in providing excellent prizes for the raffle. A BIG thank you to everyone for their contribution.

We were delighted that Kevin Hateley of New College Worcester (NCW) was able to attend the Dinner. He added his thanks, on behalf of both of our affiliated schools, to all the golfers for the fund-raising from the day and gave a brief talk about NCW and the work of the students, who range in age from 11 to 19.

The Master Steve Thomas presented prizes to the winning team and to the 2nd and 3rd teams. There were also prizes for the longest drive of the day for the nearest the pin on the 5th and 13th tees.

The winning team. Carl Green, Simon Hobbs, Greg Jarvis and Gary Thorne, with the Master, Steve Thomas.
