The Lightmongers affiliated school, New College Worcester (NCW) for blind and visually impaired children and young people held their annual Celebration Day on Saturday 28th June 2025, where the students’ achievements over the academic year are recognised and their work, including a concert of music, is show-cased for the many visitors to the event.

The Lightmongers were represented on the day by the Master, Tony Ginman and Chair of the Charitable Trust/Past Master, Steve Thomas. There was a full programme, including a Musical Showcase by the Students demonstrating their wide range of musical skills, guided tours of the School and inspiring, motivational talks by actress and disability advocate, Melissa Johns and former NCW student Eddy Eyad, who has since built a successful career in both financial services and in the music world.

The Lightmongers, through its Charitable Trust, provides financial support via grants each year to NCW (and our other affiliated school, Mary Hare for students with hearing impairments). This funding is possible through the generous support of Lightmonger members in making their annual donations to the Charitable Trust, 100% of which go to support fantastic organisations, such as NCW. This year Liveryman and Senior Court Assistant, Bruce Kirk, has additionally offered to sponsor a 3 year programme in each School to support Mental Health First Aid courses, which was discussed and warmly welcomed during the visit:

L-R: Steve Thomas, Rachel Perks (Principal), Tony Ginman, Paul Stephens (Assistant Principal and Well-being and Safeguarding Lead)

A number of the School Prizes were presented and the Master, as one of the visiting VIPs, was asked to present the key stage 5 special award which goes to a key 5 student who has made exceptional progress.

A wonderful day of celebrations for the students and staff of NCW and an inspiring day for the many visitors, including the Lightmonger representatives, Tony and Steve.

In her speech the Principal of NCW, Rachel Perks shared her pride in the students and gratitude for the incredible support shown by the community:

“We are delighted that once again, we have brought the NCW community together to celebrate the amazing achievements of our wonderful students. The College prides itself on providing opportunities for all and maximising educational and life outcomes for all vision impaired children, and equipping each student with skills for life that result in them being independent, self-confident, and able to lead productive and fulfilled lives. We are very thankful that families, guests, and speakers came from all over the UK to celebrate our brilliant students.”
