Our annual Charity Golf Day this year was held 28th May at the Frilford Heath Golf Club, near Oxford. The weather was grey, rather than sunny, like much of Spring 2024, but most of the golfers completed their rounds in the dry, with just the last few being caught in a heavy shower on the last fairway. Golfers then enjoyed a convivial time at the 19th tee (the bar) exchanging experiences of their rounds before the evening Awards dinner took place.
The Lightmongers Charitable Trust makes financial donations to a range of charities that support people with sensory impairment of either sight or hearing, where good lighting has a positive impact for the individuals affected. The funds raised from this year’s Golf Day will be donated to our two affiliated schools: New College Worcester for blind students and Mary Hare School for deaf students. Later this year they will update us on how the funds raised have been used to support their students.
At the Awards Dinner Norman Emery, Captain of the Lightmongers Golf Society, gave a brief update on their activities and highlighted the terrific achievement of the Lightmongers team in coming 2nd in the Prince Arthur Cup this year (one of the longest established golf tournaments in the UK). The Society has generously donated £250 to the Charitable Trust in support of our affiliated schools.
Liveryman James Hill, who had organised the golf tournament, then announced the winning teams, commenting that it was a very close run thing between the 1st and 2nd teams:
Overall winners with a score of 84 was the Littledown Team:
2nd with a score of 83 points was the Norman Emery/Graham Lewis team:
3rd with a score of 80 was the Electrical Testing/Peter Le Manquais team:
4th with a score of 73 was the Holophane Team:
The winners of the nearest the pin holes were David Barnwell (11th hole) and Callum Petrie (9th hole).
Congratulations to all the winners!
During the Awards dinner a raffle was very generously supported by those attending, raising a further £680 for our two affiliated schools. The full amount raised through our Charity Golf Day will be finalised and reported on in the coming weeks.
The Master Lightmonger, Peter McVeigh, thanked all the golfers that took part, and their Companies, for their support to the event and the charitable causes mentioned at the beginning of this article; that support is very much appreciated. In particular he thanked James Hill and the Electrical Testing team for the organisation of the tournament and Peter Le Manquais for organising the arrangements with Frilford Heath Golf Club and for promoting the event in the industry.
His final vote of thanks was to the many Sponsors of the event, (see details at the end of this article), whose generosity was magnificent and hugely appreciated.
For our 2025 Charity Golf Day the plan is to hold that at the RAC Club, Epsom and the date of that will be advised in the near future, once it has been confirmed by the Club.
