On August 23rd a group of 30 Lightmongers had the great privilege to be welcomed aboard HMS Queen Elizabeth, the Royal Navy’s latest aircraft carrier.
When the Lightmongers first formed an affiliation with the Royal Navy it was with the aircraft carrier HMS Invincible and our affiliation has remained with aircraft carriers ever since. We are proud indeed to be affiliated with the latest and most modern carrier to come into service.
This invitation from the Captain was our first opportunity to have a general visit to the ship and it is fair to say that we were all hugely impressed with it’s size and capabilities and even more so with the highly professional officers and crew who looked after us whilst we were on board. The Ship was preparing to go off on a three month deployment a week after our visit, but even with all the preparation for that going on we were made warmly welcome.
Another reason for our visit was to enable the Lightmongers to present a gift to mark our affiliation. This was in the form of two decanters and salvers for the Wardroom, which the Master presented to the Captain.
It was a tremendous visit and a privilege to be part of. Hopefully there will be opportunities for more Lightmongers to visit from time to time when the Ship is in port so look out for announcements about that in the future.
