Past Master Barbara Harding speaking at the Anniversary Dinner
On Thursday 28th of November Past Masters Barbara and John Harding were invited to join our affiliated RAF Cadets Unit, 56 (Woolwich) Air Training Corp, to celebrate 80 years since the formation of the squadron.
The event was held at The Union Jack Club in Waterloo. On arrival we were greeted by 2 cadets who had been assigned with the task of looking after us; a job that they did exceptionally well, organising a pre-dinner drink, engaging us in conversation and finally directing us to our seat at the table.
The cadets all looked extremely smart in white shirts and black bow ties. In addition to Barbara and myself the Mayor of Greenwich and his partner were guests of honour.
Officer Commanding 56 (Woolwich), Squadron Leader Mark Bird, gave an account of the Squadrons history over the last 80 years, pointing out the bravery of a number of early members who served in the Second World War. He then made a presentation to the Mayor of Greenwich of a montage of photographs of the unit then and now.
Mark also talked about the family of 56 Woolwich and of how The London Borough of Greenwich and the Lightmongers were an important part of that family.
Barbara and I were proud and honoured to have been asked to represent the Lightmongers on this very special evening and to meet so many of these wonderful young people.
Long may our affiliation with 56 Woolwich continue, to the mutual benefit of both parties.
